Chelsea in 1996

From New York Magazine, May 13, 1996. "Chelsea! It's the New SoHo! Maybe." Note the "railroad overpass" label on The Highline.

"From the start, Marks was intent on creating not only a gallery but a whole gallery scene. He stayed open on Sundays, when SoHo galleries are closed."

bwahaha, I remember this article well. And when Daniel Silverstein moved his gallery to Chelsea a year later, I tried to persuade him to paint his quote on his rolldown shutter:

"It's going to be tough to get people to schlep all that way for a bunch of nobodies."
